Greetings Friends. Today we’ll learn syllogism tricks for bank exams. We’ll in particular see how to solve syllogism using venn diagram. Then, we’ll look into syllogism possibility tricks. In later section, we’ll see how to solve syllogism questions without Venn Diagram. We’ll follow through the tricks we learn with bonus syllogism questions and answers PDF.
What is Syllogism?
Syllogism is a type of logical reasoning that tests a persons deductive skills. Given a set of “Statements” and assuming them to be true, Syllogism questions queries whether a “Conclusion” is true or not. Syllogism is a Greek word for Conclusion or Inference.
Syllogism Example
All pen are blue.
Reynold is a pen.
Hence, conclusion is Reynold is blue.
Solving Syllogism Questions using Venn Diagram
Syllogism Tricks
If we talk about Syllogism questions for Bank PO Exams/ IBPS PO Exams, we’ll observe that most of the questions can be attempted in just a minute or so. This makes Syllogism one of the most lucrative section in Reasoning section. Also, about 34 questions are from Syllogism. This makes it even more important.
Before we start, we’ll see three quick Syllogism Tricks.
PS: Here there is no case of possibility. Just Conclusions. In case of possibility we’ll have to see further. But possibility questions are not that frequent. Most of your questions can be solved just with these three statements.
Statements  CONCLUSION Diagram 
Some A is B  
No A is B  
All A is B 
Please remember these diagrams carefully.
[colorbox]I’ll repeat again that it does not contain possibility. Only Conclusions.
But, when we deal with No A is B statement, we have to draw possibility diagrams. We’ll discuss that later.[/colorbox]
Now, lets see some Syllogism questions and answers for Bank PO Exams/ IBPS PO Exams.
Question 1:
Statements:
 Some blonde are tall.
 Some tall are brunette.
 All brunette are lovely.
Conclusions :
 Some lovely are tall.
 Some blonde are lovely.
Step  Statement  Diagram 
Step 1  Some blonde are tall.  
Step 2  Some tall are brunette.  
Step 3  All brunette are lovely. 
Hence,
 Since Lovely intersect with Tall, conclusion 1 follows.
 Since Blonde does not intersect with Lovely, Conclusion 2 does NOT follow.
Please Solve below questions using the syllogism tricks we just learned, and let us know in the comments if you face any problems:
Question 2:
Statements:
 All dark are gold.
 Some papers are gold.
 All papers are white.
Conclusions :
 Some white are gold.
 Some gold are dark.
That’s it for basic syllogism tricks. Now we deal with syllogism tricks related to No A is B Conclusion.
When we see such Conclusion, we have to draw alternate diagram to prove it wrong.
[colorbox]In other words, you have to prove Some A is B in any diagram possible. Only if no diagram can prove that Some A is B, then and only then can we say that No A is B Conclusion follows.[/colorbox]
To reiterate, whenever you see No A is B type Conclusion, try to draw alternate diagrams.
Questions 3:
Statements:
 All red are bad.
 Some bad are blue.
 All blue are ribbon.
Conclusions :
 Some red are ribbon.
 No red is ribbon.
Step  Statement  Diagram 
Step 1  All red are bad.  
Step 2  Some bad are blue.  
Step 3  All blue are ribbon. 
When we look at the statements, we see that
 Red and Ribbon does not intersect, Conclusion 1 does not follow
 Now we have No A is B type Conclusion statement. We can draw following diagram to prove it wrong.
Step  Statement  Diagram 
Step 1  To prove that No Red is Ribbon is False 
Thus this alternate diagram lies well within the framework of three statements and yet prove that Some Red is Ribbon. However, if this statement proves that some Red is Ribbon then Conclusion 1 becomes true.
[colorbox]To put it in simple words, if Step 3 is correct then Conclusion 2 becomes true and Conclusion 1 becomes false.
If Step 4 is correct then Conclusion 1 becomes true and Conclusion 2 becomes false.
In such cases, the answer is Either Conclusion 1 follows or Conclusion 2.[/colorbox]
Please attempt syllogism questions and answers given below.
Question 4:
Statements:
 All brown are white.
 Some white are pink.
 Some pink are dark.
 No dark is blue.
Conclusions:
 No blue is pink.
 Some blue are pink.

Now lets move on to Syllogism Possibility questions and how to solve them.
Questions of syllogism possibility tricks
Question 5:
Statement:
 No Stone is metal
 Some metals are papers
 All papers are glass
Conclusions:
 At least some glasses are metals
 All stone being glass is a possibility
Step  Statement  Diagram 
Step 1 
No Stone is metal 

Step 2  Some metals are papers.  
Step 3  All papers are glass 
With Step 3 it follows that at least some glasses are metals.
Now, the second conclusion is a possibility. So, an alternate diagram must be drawn to prove it.
Step  Statement  Diagram 
Step 1  To prove that All stone being glass is a possibility 
This diagram lies well within the guidelines of the statements and also prove the second Conclusion of Possibility.
Hence, both Conclusion 1 and 2 follows.
Question 6:
Statements:
 All pages are copy
 Some pages are chairs
Conclusions:
 There is a possibility that All pages are copy
 There is a possibility that Some pages are chairs
All Syllogism Practice questions can be easily solved through Venn Diagram. Just practice the syllogism tricks and you’ll get the hang of it in no time.
[colorbox]NOTE: When solving No A is B type CONCLUSION, we try to prove it wrong by alternative Venn diagram. If we prove it wrong, the conclusion is incorrect. If we can’t prove it wrong by any diagram, then the conclusion is correct.
But in case of possibility questions, we try to prove it correct by alternative Venn diagram. If we prove it, the conclusion is correct. If we can’t prove it by any diagram, then the conclusion is incorrect.[/colorbox]

Question 7:
Statements:
 Some pens are pencils
 Some pencils are stationery
Conclusions:
 At least some stationary are pens
 All stationery being pencils is a possibility
Question 8:
Statements:
 Some goose are peacocks
 No peacocks are sparrows
Conclusions:
 All sparrow being a goose is a possibility
 At least some sparrow are peacocks
Question 9:
Statements:
 Some cats are balls
 All pencils are balls.
 Some noodles are pencils
Conclusions:
 Some balls are not cats is a possibility.
 Some balls are noodles.
Question 10:
Statements:
 Some peaches are mangoes
 All mangoes are apple
Conclusions:
 There is a possibility All mangoes are apple
 All mangoes being peaches is a possibility
Question 11:
Statements:
 All green are yellow.
 Some yellow are black.
 Some black are blue.
 All blue are brown.
Conclusions:
 Some black are brown.
 Some blue are yellow.
 Some yellow are green.
 No green is brown.

Syllogism without Venn Diagram in english
However, in this tutorial I’ll be teaching you another easy method. This will make your calculation considerably faster, particularly for syllogism involving two or three sentences.
Before we proceed we need to look at various terms involving syllogism. These are
 Subject
 Middle Term
 Predicate
Example:
Statement 1: All Cats are Dogs
Here, subject is Cats, and predicate is Dogs. No middle term here as this is a single statement.
Statement 1: All Cats are Dogs
Statement 2: All Dogs are Cows
Here, subject is Cats, middle term is Dogs, and predicate is Cows. The reason Dogs is not a predicate here is because Dogs help us form a relationship between Subject from Statement 1 and Predicate from Statement 2.
Cats —–> Dogs —–>Cows
(subject) (middle) (predicate)
Rules for Reciprocity Conclusion for Single Statements

Lets understand this with an Example.
Statement 1: ‘All cats are dogs’
By reciprocity rule above, it will also mean ‘Some dogs are cats’ (Please note it’s some dogs. Look at the table)
Statement 2: ‘Some cats are dogs’
By reciprocity rule above, it will also mean ‘Some dogs are cats’ (Please note it’s some dogs. Look at the table)
Statement 3: ‘No cat is dog’
By reciprocity rule above, it will also mean ‘No dog is cat’ (Please note it’s no dog. Look at the table)

Now lets go through some syllogism questions and answers.
Syllogism questions and answers without Venn Diagram
Example1:
Statements :
A) All eagles are birds.
B) All birds are white.
C) All white are cows.Determine which Conclusions are correct :
I) All birds are cows
II All white are eagles
From statements b & c, we can easily conclude that “All birds are cows” (Rule 4). So conclusion I is correct.
Similarly from statements a & b, we can conclude that “All eagles are white” (Rule 4). Now from rule 1, we can conclude that “Some white are eagles.” Hence, conclusion II is incorrect.Example 2:
A) Some clothes are red.
B) All red are blue.
C) Some blue are liquids.
D) All liquids are solids.
Determine which Conclusions are correct :
I) Some clothes are blue.
II) Some red are liquids.
III)Some blue are solids.
From statement a & b, we conclude that “Some clothes are blue” (Rule 6). Hence, conclusion I is correct.
From statement b & c, we cannot conclude anything (Rule 5). Hence, conclusion II is wrong.
From statement c & d, we conclude that “Some blue are solids” (Rule 6). Hence, conclusion III is correct.
Let us know which one you prefer. I, myself, find Venn Diagram to be the easiest. But some of students Prefer this method. Well, as long as the exam is cleared, the method doesn’t count 😉
